When you hear the word pilates, it can mean many different things. Some people know it from physiotherapy, others from gyms, while others have tried it at home with an online video. Often you end up thinking: “That didn't feel the same at all - but isn't it all Pilates?”
The explanation is that there are roughly two main directions: classical pilates and contemporary (modern) pilates.
Classical Pilates
The classical approach is as close as possible to Joseph Pilates’ original method. The exercises are performed in a set system and sequence - designed to create progression, with each exercise building on the previous one.
Here you work both on matwork and on equipment such as the reformer, cadillac, barrel and chair. Although there are slight variations in execution and sequence among the major Pilates schools, the starting point is always Joseph Pilates’ original work.
Contemporary/Modern Pilates
Modern Pilates is based on Joseph Pilates’ exercises, but adapts them to today's lifestyle and to new knowledge from physiotherapy, biomechanics and rehabilitation. Exercises can be adjusted, new ones can be added, and the sequence is more flexible.
This means that a modern Pilates class can look different from a classic programme - and not always include the familiar exercises like Hundred, Swan or Leg Circles.
What do we do at Pilates Søborg?
At Pilates Søborg, the classical method is our foundation. This is where we find structure, progression and coherence in the training. At the same time, we build on the classical base with inspiration from contemporary, so the teaching reflects both tradition and modern understanding of the body.
Why combine classic and modern?
Because people are different. Some classic exercises require a certain strength and may therefore need to be customised. Other times, new exercises need to be added to meet specific needs - for example after an injury, surgery or sedentary work.
By combining classical methodology with contemporary knowledge, we offer training that is intelligent, effective and personalised. This means you get the best of both worlds - a system that has stood the test of time for more than 100 years and a contemporary approach that ensures the exercises fit your body, your level and your goals.
