.... without also mentioning Matwork-pilates, Tower-pilates, Chair-pilates, Barrel-pilates etc.
Reformer Pilates is a popular phenomenon where you practice Pilates on a machine called a Reformer. Unfortunately, there are also a lot of centres that teach class training on the reformer without actually teaching pilates.
The reformer is part of the comprehensive Pilates equipment, which also includes all of the above.
Unfortunately, there is a rather unfortunate tendency in both the training and therapy community to confuse reformer training with Pilates. The word Reformer can be misunderstood as a seal of quality.
In principle, it doesn't matter what equipment you use when practising Pilates.
What's important is that you practice Pilates with the knowledge and focus of a good Pilates instructor.
Most Pilates exercises can and should be practised on all equipment, and a good instructor will quickly recognise your body's needs and choose equipment and exercises that best support and strengthen your body.
To do this requires a deep understanding of body movement and a thorough knowledge of Pilates as the comprehensive workout that it is. A good instructor can teach you the Pilates exercises and will probably use the full range of equipment to give you a systematic and targeted workout, adapted to you and your body's specific needs. In this way, Pilates can benefit everyone, whether you're young, old, injured or a top athlete.
