I've had to eat my own words and recognise that I was wrong. I'm glad I did now, because my realisation has given me a new sense of well-being in my body that I haven't felt for many years. Of course, it's not the realisation itself that has given me more energy, peace of mind and a better and healthier posture, but rather the fact that I've now pushed myself to try something new and have taken up Pilates. A form of exercise that I previously shook my head at.
I always thought Pilates wasn't a workout, that it was something people did to unwind from a busy day, maybe, but it wasn't exercise. As long as it didn't involve sweat dripping from my forehead and heavy weights, it didn't make sense to me. I'm wiser now!
After my herniated disc, I had to lay off the heavy weights. I couldn't go for a run without my back hurting the next day either, so what do you do when you still have a desire to keep moving and, most importantly, a dream of regaining back strength? You start Pilates. At least that's what my physiotherapist explained to me and after the first session I was hooked!
Now I go to Pilates regularly and the teachers at Pilates Cph are really good, and in just a few weeks I've noticed a huge difference in my body. Every time I've been to a class, I have the same feeling in my body as when I step out after an hour massage. I'm relaxed, my body feels warm and all tension has disappeared.
I've suddenly found abs I never knew existed, gained new control over my body and regained the joy of training.
BUT THE WILDEST THING OF ALL IS Results. I have previously spent many hours in a regular gym without really feeling that I was getting anywhere. After just four weeks at Pilates CPH I can see a big change. The wildest thing is that I can now run again! In a very short time, with the right training, I have regained the strength in my back to be able to go for a run again. For me, it's magical, because I've hardly noticed that I've trained my back while doing Pilates. At Pilates Cph, training is nothing like I've experienced before. It's not exhausting and it doesn't overwork my muscles, but it teaches me to work with my body in a controlled way and strengthen it in a completely different and much more positive way.
I've had a training epiphany that I can't help but share! I've realised that working out doesn't have to be overwhelming and that you don't have to find yourself standing in a crowded changing room, running on a treadmill next to 25 other people and certainly don't have to hang out with big men puffing and throwing weights at the local gym. Whenever I worked out at a regular gym, it negatively affected my mood, but now that I work out at Pilates Cph, it's almost like stepping into a spa centre and the results I get from my workout are much more impressive than before.
I can't imagine ever living without Pilates in my life again. Once you feel the difference on your own body, you can't stop. It's highly addictive 😉
