Language is the decisive factor

“Pilates at Pilates Cph is the only workout I've ever stuck with.

Yes, of course it's brilliant training that suits my temperament.
But it's just as much because the language is respectful, inclusive and doesn't fall into the “We're girls who train to be thin and live up to a certain body ideal” trap!

Regardless of the type of language, language is crucial to our well-being in social situations. And this also applies when we're at Pilates training.

In the past, I've heard the instructor justify exercises at the fitness centre with: “There's room for one more cookie” (typically around Christmas time), “It's almost bikini season” or terms like: “Up to the bar girls!” (When the chest needs to be pushed out).

I found the constant references - aimed at a body ideal that we have to live up to and (apparently?) the only reason to exercise - to be decidedly unintelligent and distasteful!

At Pilates Cph it's different...

Here you are guided with respect for your body. That you should go for it because your hip flexors will be so happy with the extra flexibility.
And when an exercise doesn't quite work, you won't be told that you're flabby - (no!). It's because your muscles are too short or a little stiff at the moment. And you're working on that now.
It's a completely different approach.

We don't train to achieve perfect bodies and thus status. We do it to get healthy and strong bodies, to feel good and carry ourselves with dignity in the world with a straight back.

Thank you for that. It's liberating and offers a great quality of life.

It's highly motivating and always makes me so happy. So happy that I return to the mat again and again... and again.

Because those hip flexors don't stretch themselves.

Thank you. Kh Anna
