How to keep your back young

Did you know that the spine needs to move every day to stay healthy?

Between the bones of the spine are discs of cartilage that need to be pushed and pulled in order to stay healthy, just like squeezing fluid out of a sponge and letting it refill.

Cartilage acts as a cushion for the bones of the spine, creating space for blood vessels and nerves.

If the cartilage discs don't get enough fluid, they lose elasticity, just like a sponge drying out.

Joints that don't get the necessary moisture and nourishment through movement become susceptible to wear and tear, and injuries can occur.

Fortunately, you can prevent injuries and unnecessary wear and tear on the spine:

Every day, bend backwards, forwards, sideways and rotate your back to the right and left. In addition, walk with brisk steps to stimulate the springy effect. And that's how you keep your back young.

Some joints will naturally move better than others.

In Pilates, the spine is always in focus and the movements are systemised.

Your instructor will help you give all joints the necessary stimulation to keep your spine young, supple and injury-free.

And it's absolutely correct when your Pilates instructor says:

“You are only as old as your spine is flexible” (J.H.Pilates)
